OVERVIEW

IoT has enabled businesses to improve their operations and gain a competitive edge. However, some haven’t fully experienced the full benefit of this technology. Did they miss something?

Where are you in the industry 4.0 maturity stages?
Knowing your company’s digital maturity will help you know how to unlock the full value of your IoT solutions. Use this list as a quick self-assessment.

Stage 1: Computerization

In this stage, different information technologies are used in isolation. Computerization is primarily used to perform repetitive tasks more efficiently. However, it’s still possible to find machines without a digital interface, especially machinery with long life cycles or machines that are manually operated.

Stage 2: Connectivity

Business applications are now connected to each other and Internet Protocol (IP) is becoming more widely used. Isolated deployment of information technology is replaced by connected components, which is a key requirement for the Internet of Things.

Stage 3: Visibility

To become an agile enterprise, company-wide visibility is essential. In this stage, sensors enable processes to be monitored automatically. The data gathered by the sensors provide useful insights so the company can make informed decisions.

Stage 4: Transparency

Transparency is all about understanding why something is happening and producing knowledge through data analytics. Having transparency also enables collaboration between company departments and allows a decentralized decision-making process.

Stage 5: Predictive Capacity

The company utilizes data to help predict and depict scenarios that are likely to occur. As a result, the company can anticipate future developments and take appropriate countermeasures in good time. Moreover, they can reduce unexpected events caused by disruptions and plan more robust operations.

Stage 6: Adaptability

Adaptation allows a company to delegate certain decisions to IT systems so it can easily respond to changing business conditions. The goal of adaptability has been achieved when the company can use data to make decisions that have the best possible results in the shortest possible time, or as we call it high Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).

Top benefits from IoT are achievable when your company has reached the stage 6 of maturity at all points of the value-chain. If you’re not there yet, don’t worry..

You can level up

Use these 4 steps of smart manufacturing implementation to grow in your industry 4.0 maturity.
In turn, your company can enjoy the most value from your IoT solutions.

Find it
This first step requires you to gather your data and find the problem. Do so by acquiring real time data from internet of things (IoT) solutions and manufacturing execution systems (MES). The data will show you the operation’s current condition and the symptoms of a problem which leads to the root cause of the problem. Visibility at its finest.

Case
Company X is experiencing a backlog in production despite using IoT for data visibility (stage 3 of digital maturity). From the IoT sensors, it is found that machine A, B, and C are not connected to each other. Therefore, they cannot be analyzed as a single production line. This scattered data is a problem.

Fix it
Once you find the main problem, your next task is to find out why it is happening. Do so by using analytics to see deep into your data through time, cross devices, and all along the operation chain. Knowing “the why” allows you to transform information into actionable insight. A decisive, data-informed action.

Case
Fix the scattered data by consolidating all the sensors on the factory floor into one monitoring platform. With the new found transparency (stage 4), Company X finds out that there is a bottleneck in the production line; machine A is overloaded with tasks while machine B and C sit unproductive. This is the reason why the backlog happens. So, Company X decides to delegate half of machine A’s tasks to machine B.

Track it
So, you’ve made an action to solve your problem. The next step is to track its progress and efficacy while forecasting what will happen after. Data analytics and artificial intelligence can help with such forecasting. This step allows you to anticipate and prepare for future challenges. Efficiently one step ahead.

Case
The bottleneck is solved, no more backlog. Success! In order to prevent the same case from happening, Company X uses data analytics to monitor the amount of work orders and create an automatic alert for when product demands almost reach the production line’s max capacity. Based on the trends gathered by AI (stage 5), they will be overloaded during the national holiday month

Understand it
Now that you understand the inner workings of your operation including its trends, you can begin to automate certain actions based on the existing patterns. Do so by utilizing machine learning that helps turn data prediction into proactive action. This will self-optimize your manufacturing line, making it run with increasing flexibility and agility in a fast-paced environment.

Case
Now that Company X has anticipated the increase in demand, it created an automated action where machine B will handle more of machine A’s tasks while machine C handles both its tasks and machine B’s. True enough, an increase in demand takes place. Automatically, the machines adapt to the situation by using the new task allocation (stage 6). As a result, production runs as planned and no backlog happens. Knowing that the system works, now Company X can find new opportunities to grow their business while letting automation handle routine tasks.

Implementing these steps can increase the value of your IoT solutions thus opening up new
opportunities for business growth. Apply these steps in every point of your operational chain and watch
your manufacturing business transform.
