The Need and The Sustainability of IoT in the Indonesian Industrial Sector

The Need and The Sustainability of IoT in the Indonesian Industrial Sector

The industrial sector is the largest contributor to the economy and is a driving force for the national economy. According to the Ministry of Industry, the manufacturing sector alone has contributed 17.34% to the national GDP in the second quarter of 2021. With this achievement, it is targeted that the contribution of the industrial sector as a whole to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) can be more than 20% in 2024.

Although Indonesia's domestic market has the potential and will continue to contribute to economic growth, there will always be three main factors that cannot be separated, there are human resources, investment, and of course technology in the form of digital infrastructure. In this industrial era 4.0, digital infrastructure such as the internet of things with proper implementation will be able to accelerate economic growth, while at the same time preparing adaptive human resources. Here are some implementations of the internet of things in several industrial sectors in Indonesia.

Logistics and Transportation

The use of IoT will leverage vehicle usage management efficiency for the logistics and transportation industry. The use of sensors in industrial devices can determine the right fleet to track temperature, carry logistics, and set the driver availability without having to check one by one. Especially for commodities such as food, beverages, pharmaceuticals which are very sensitive to temperature.

Retail

Retailers need to be aware of the key main factors within this industry. They need to prepare for the availability of new advanced technology-based tools for investigating markets. Retailers are pushed to understand and predict market trends, furthermore they need the capability  to quickly respond to the  external  environment  whenever it's needed.  Therefore, IoT can help retailers to build the systems that can match customer behavior, trends and analyze information. All of this will result in improved supply chain and efficient operational costs.

Manufacture

Manufacture industry approached by IoT with industrial applications and smart manufacturing. This smart manufacturing provides a manufacturing execution system that builds a whole digital ecosystem. The biggest improvement is on the implementation stages. For example, the first one is providing symptoms and root cause to prepare for maintenance. The second is diagnostic capability to schedule maintenance. The third is predictive capability to forecast any damage to industrial equipment. The last one is providing autonomous action and machines.

Energy

The energy industry is also the one that requires IoT technology. For example, using the Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) in public water supply with a Smart Metering System, technicians no longer have to manually gather information of what’s shown on a meter every week or month. This smart metering will send automatically accurate real-time data that can help the company to monitor energy usage, control costs, and prevent damage and leakage in one advanced platform.

With the widespread usage of internet of things in many industry sectors, it's unavoidable that the technology has a huge impact for supporting growth and improving the customer domestic industry. Telkomsel IoT is providing a holistic digital solution and ready to collaborate with you to chase all the transformation needed.
