How AR and VR Increase Industrial Productivity

AR and VR Increase Industrial Productivity

Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) solutions are the talk of the town. Since Facebook rebranded itself as Meta, it is apparent that the tech world is going towards the metaverse for socializing, gaming, even virtual living. Makes you wonder, does this trend have a similar influence on “real world” Indonesian industries?

No, we’re not building factories in the metaverse yet. However, AR/VR technology is starting to find its usage in Indonesian industrial sites. They are used as an education tool, training tool, and maintenance assistance tool.

A warehouse for a steam granulation plant in Indonesia has begun using AR as a way to educate its employees and visitors of safety conducts within the factory. Users can simply scan the QR code on posters around the factory site to learn the working procedures in the specific area, the safety equipment needed to be used, also some tour information and direction for visitors.

AR and VR are being used as training tools for factory operators and maintenance technicians in Gersik. The two technologies allow users to practice using tools which otherwise would be in use or learn how to operate machines used in the production line. Rather than waiting for a downtime to practice on the real machine or tools, user can do it virtually and repeat the material until its second nature.

In another factory, AR is used to assist maintenance technicians in monitoring machine condition in real-time without opening the panel doors or waiting for downtime. The technology is a visualizer for the data received from IoT sensors along the production line. This way, technicians can know which machines need immediate care with just pointing their mobile device to the machine. The AR is also equipped with manual so that technicians don’t have to waste time flipping pages, rather they can read the material on the spot using a simple search. The technology not only saves time and effort, it increases the technicians’ safety as well.

AR/VR isn’t just for games and entertainment. Industrial complexes can use it for simple conduct and safety induction for employees, tour and direction information for visitors. It can speed up training time while maintaining safety. For maintenance, it can increase work efficiency, help strengthen communication with remote experts, and lower the risk of incidents in job sites.

The two solutions are a part of Telkomsel IoT Smart Manufacturing solution. Just connect it to your factory floor and watch the transformation in your factory. Contact our IoT Expert to start using AR/VR in your factories.
